Lack of Sleep: Torture or Cultural Norm?

"When you go without sleep for 20 to 25 hours, your cognitive impairment is similar to that of someone with a blood alcohol level of 0.10 percent." -International Journal of Occupational Medicine & Environmental Health

During the few months after I had my son, I quickly started to understand why sleep deprivation has been used throughout history as a method of torture. Because that's exactly how it feels. You want to jump out of your own skin. You have no idea what time of day it is. Every physical ache and pain is magnified by 1,000. You are making mistakes left and right that could potentially lead to a serious, even deadly, accident.

Sadly, our culture has a way of celebrating sleep deprivation. For instance as a nurse, I can tell you that it's common to hear staff talk about working "three 12-hr. shifts in a row with only six hours total sleep" - as if they are proud! You will never get a badge for being sleep deprived. In fact, you will instead put yourself and others in danger.
