What You Should Know Before Buying CBD Oil For Dogs On Amazon

What You Should Know Before Buying CBD Oil For Dogs On Amazon

Amazon does not allow for the sale of CBD products on their platform. SO the question stands, why are there still thousands of listings for “CBD” on their site? Well the reality is these products are often a far cry from the CBD people believe they are buying.

What does Amazon say?

Amazon expressly prohibits the sale of any CBD products on their platform. In fact they have gone so far as to make this very clear to understand in their guidelines:

“Listings for products containing cannabidiol (CBD) are prohibited, including but not limited to:

Full-spectrum hemp oil

Rich hemp oil

Products that have been identified as containing CBD by LegitScript”

These requirements explicitly mention CBD among a long list of other prohibited substances. Which leads us to ask: Are the CBD pet products for sale on Amazon all fake? Well, yes and no.

So, what exactly is the ‘CBD oil’ I got off Amazon?

Much to the annoyance of genuine CBD producers, who can’t currently sell their products on Amazon, the products you’ll find on the site are likely to come from one of three sub-par categories:

Mystery oils:

These oils are marketed as ‘CBD Oils’ or as ‘CBD Oil for pets’ however when looking more closely into the ingredients listed you will find a plethora of other ingredients apart from CBD itself!

Many individuals see these products believing they are buying the real thing and are then in possession of an oil that will never yield the results they are hoping to see for their pets. What is shocking is that despite the heaps of negative reviews on these products there are still enough positive and possibly fraudulent reviews claiming the products work. So always be mindful.

It may be too obvious a fact to remind purchasers but if a product is not expressly shown to have CBD in its ingredients then it probably isn’t CBD. What exactly these oils are you can’t really say for sure as if someone is willing to falsify ingredients. How true is what has really been listed on the bottle?

Simply put, the risk isn’t worth it when it comes to your pet!

Off-brand CBD products

When products are being falsely labeled and promoted as having CBD there is the odd chance that one or two of these items do contain CBD. The term ‘CBD’ being banned on the site means that any listings that do claim to be CBD can be pulled down.

So companies get creative and use phrases like ‘hemp extract’ or ‘hemp oil’. When the Washington Post looked into CBD levels in these products, they found that 11 of 13 tested did actually contain CBD oil. Though, levels were often well below those found in legitimate products.

Hemp seed oil

The third category of products that shows up under searches for ‘CBD oil for dogs’ on Amazon is hemp oil.

Unlike the above, hemp oil or hemp seed oil is a legitimate product, but it’s not CBD. Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seeds on cannabis plants and is most commonly used in cooking, cosmetics, and various household and personal uses. Notably not for its therapeutic abilities the way CBD is.

So when buying hemp oil you aren’t necessarily able to expect the results that you would from CBD.

Will Amazon ever sell legitimate CBD oil for dogs

Amazon’s unique place in the US economy creates many questions concerning its rights and ability to sell cannabis products and medical supplements. But theoretically speaking, there shouldn’t be any direct barrier to them selling CBD.

Since the signing of the 2018 Farm Bill into law, US companies have been free to grow, produce, transport, and sell products containing industrial hemp, which is cannabis with extremely low concentrations (no more than 0.3 percent) of THC—the compound in cannabis that makes you high.

Most, if not all CBD oil for dogs is made from industrial hemp (and ideally sourced from organic farms), so they fall well within the 2018 FDA legislation.

The real reason why Amazon hasn’t yet come on board with CBD is likely to do with its ability to monitor and maintain its marketplace according to FDA standards. In other words, Amazon may be playing it cautious with all cannabis products, due to the risk of bad actors using the site to sell marijuana.

That said, Amazon tends to make announcements concerning their site without much of a build-up, and sometimes without any announcements at all, so things may change literally overnight. We’ll let you know if they do.

So where should I buy my dog’s CBD oil from?

CBD products are yet to be regulated by the FDA, which means not all products on the market are of the same quality or manufactured using the same standards.
